Camouflage never officially goes out of fashion — like leopard and stripes, it’s practically a neutral but this fall, the print is hotter than ever! Camo might seem masculine and tough, but the truth is, it looks better on women than it does on men. It’s all just a matter of how you style it. Assuming you don’t want to look like you’re wearing army fatigues or auditioning for the next season of Duck Dynasty, here are eight do’s and don’ts you might want to keep in mind, plus some great camo pieces to pick up.
1. DO accessorize.
Camo is a very masculine print — which is why it looks so cool on women — but accessorizing will help keep you from looking too boyish. Simple metallic jewelry in gold and silver is cool and feminine but not overly girly. Try a smaller, cross-body bag as opposed to a larger carryall and opt for high heels or a feminine pair of ballet or d’orsay flats as opposed to sneakers or flat, chunky boots.
2. DON’T wear it head-to-toe.
Camo is great on everything from jeans to dresses to bags, but limit yourself to one camo piece at a time if you don’t want to look like you’re going hunting in the woods.
3. DO add color.
Camo looks great paired with black, white, and other neutrals, but it also works with bold neons and even soft pastels. Adding a little color helps soften the look and makes it feel a little more fun.
4. DON’T mix it with animal print.
Camo and animal prints often look very similar, so when you mix them together the whole outfit can start to feel a little busy. Also, the presence of animal print makes hunting associations pretty much unavoidable. If you really want to try camo print mixing, make sure to break it up with some solid pieces as well. Plaid and other linear prints work best, but in small doses.
5. DO wear it at night
Camo is not just for daytime. It looks really good with anything sparkly or metallic, which makes it perfect for going out. Transition basic jeans and T-shirt look to evening with a camo clutch and some metallic accessories, or add a gold belt to a camo pencil skirt and a low-cut top for a date look that’s sexy and cool.
My top camo picks – Cutout Tee (pictured & under $20), Boyfriend Shirt, Cold Shoulder Tee, Sweatshirt, Criss Cross Tee (under $25) and Cutout V Neck Tee. I’ve also been eyeing this Camo Bomber Jacket and this Oversized Sweatshirt for a week or so now! While writing this post I ordered this Military Jacket which is perfect for layering!
The bottom line trick to pulling off this tomboyish trend: wear it in moderation. Whether it be a tee, backpack, bomber, button-up or joggers, pick one piece to play up with the print. Or simply add a bold neon or metallic accessories!
P.S. If you would have told me 6 months ago that I’d be writing a post on camo, I would’ve laughed. This look definitely encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone! And you know what? I love everything about it! It’s a firm belief of mine, one should do that more so than not (hinting to myself here)! Happy Thursday everyone!
